Frequently Asked Questions

We certainly haven’t thought of everything you might want to know, but here are the most common questions we get from out-of-state students and their families.

Is TCNJ an affordable option for families outside New Jersey?
It’s never been more affordable, thanks to a decision by our Board of Trustees in Spring 2021 to re-set out-of-state tuition by approximately $7000 for incoming students.  The gap between in-state and out-of-state tuition rates has now been cut in half, not including scholarship opportunities.

So there are also specific out-of-state scholarships?
You bet! Over the past two years nearly 60% of admitted out-of-state students received award packages to help offset tuition costs. Out-of-state students are eligible for both merit and need-based scholarships in an effort to bring costs close to those paid by our in-state population. Learn more about out-of-state scholarships.

If I decide to apply to TCNJ, are application fee waivers available?

Every out-of-state high school student is allowed to submit a TCNJ Out-of-State Fee Waiver. On the TCNJ Member Form of the Common Application, the student will be asked if they intend to use a school-specific fee waiver. If they select “Yes”, then the payment page at the end of the Common Application will be bypassed. If they do not click “Yes”, they will be required to pay the $75 fee before being allowed to submit their application.

How many students at TCNJ are from outside New Jersey?
A little over 6%, and we have plans to double that number over the next few years! Right now is actually the best time to apply to The College of New Jersey as an out-of-state student… keep reading to find out why.

Is it harder to get into TCNJ as an out-of-state student?
The College of New Jersey is a highly selective institution, but because we are trying to bring more geographic diversity to our campus, we are a bit more flexible with out-of-state applicants during the admissions process.

Do most out-of-state students live on campus?
Yes, because they are guaranteed housing all four years while at TCNJ! This is a huge perk for non-NJ residents who might not be as familiar with the off-campus housing options in the Ewing area.  There are also fantastic off-campus options like Campus Town that are directly across the street from the main campus.

How can I visit the campus?

The TCNJ Admissions Office hosts a variety of visit opportunities throughout the year.   If you can’t get to campus, we encourage you to take advantage of the virtual events.
